Details

Burtons Academy offers live, high-quality, personalised CPD webinars on subjects relevant to the clinical requirements of your practice and colleagues.

Suitable for vets, nurses, and other clinical professionals, the webinars cover a wide range of topics, including anaesthetic monitoring and patient ventilation. New subjects are added on a regular basis.

The webinars and associated materials have been designed and written by our lead clinical professionals Keith Simpson MRCVS and Karen Heskin MRCVS, who have decades of collective experience spanning general and referral practice, research, development, and education. The webinars will be presented by Karen.

What will this webinar cover?

This live webinar provides the foundational understanding of mechanical ventilation with a focus on the Merlin Small Animal Ventilator. It is not only ideal for those new to mechanical ventilation or Merlin, but also serves as a refresher for veterinarians and nurses familiar with Merlin and volume cycling.

The session will discuss when and why we artificially ventilate patients and examines the physiological processes behind both spontaneous breathing and mechanical IPPV.

Understanding ventilation terminology and cycling modes will allow us to review the Merlin ventilator and consider its basic controls, safety features and breathing system options. Step-by-step, we will learn how to set Merlin up for volume cycling, and how to introduce a patient to mechanical ventilation. Weaning a patient off a ventilator will also be covered.

What’s included?

  • Why ventilate our patients?
  • Physiology and physiological effects of IPPV
  • Ventilation terminology
  • Introduction to Merlin: controls and its safety features
  • Step-by-step use of Merlin for volume cycling
  • Introducing a patient to IPPV and weaning them off

This live online session runs for approximately 1.5 hours and concludes with Q&A.

There is no limit on the number of people who can join the webinar, including from branch clinics: multiple devices can be used simultaneously from multiple locations. A webinar link and joining details will be provided.

Please note that the webinar will not be available to download or watch on demand.

Notes will be provided following the conclusion of the webinar, and CPD certificates will be available if required.
